He has the voice and did it his way. After the beating he's taken from the media, former label, and the too kewl, he's entitled to have an album he wants. The arrangements, musicians, and production are excellent and he delivers with not only the glory notes and range, but with vocal control. I do like the bonus tracks also, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do on the Deluxe cd and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me on the iTunes album.

He's finally put out an album as good as his voice, and better yet, he looks poised to carve out a niche for himself that nobody else is filling. Tried & True is similar to the stuff people like Harry Connick and Michael Buble are doing, but a step off to the side: his song choices leave the overly traveled Rat Track path for Andy Williams territory, and his delivery is less ironic hipster and more 'embrace the schmaltz and giggle with glee.' Something about the man just makes a person smile, and finally he's found music to match that personality.

Best track: Moon River. I've always hated that song, but in his hands, it's transformed.

In fact, you can say that about almost every song on the album.

If you're too embarrassed to be caught dead listening to Clay Aiken, do it the wimp's way. Buy it online instead of at the store, rename the tracks on your MP3 player to make it look like you're listening to... let's say, Vampire Weekend. Then stick some skull candy deep in your ear canals, crank up the sound and bliss out.
