Album Reviews

As a longtime fan of the gritty, bluesy rock of the Akron, OH duo The Black Keys, I was excited to see how this release would compare to albums of the past. Would it be streamlined and produced like 2008's 'Attack and Release' or closer to the edgy, Delta riffs that we heard on 'Thickfreakness' and 'Rubber Factory'?
The answer is really neither, in this case. While the tracks always maintain their definitive Black Keys sound, they seem to embody a separate sort of sound than any of their previous albums. The band has created a sense of freshness, rather than suffering from a repetitive sound that they could have so easily done (and almost did in 'Attack and Release').
The standout tracks from this album start already with its first; 'Everlasting Light' is by far the strongest piece on here. Vocalist Dan Auerbach departs from his gritty, throaty style to try out a falsetto here, and it works amazingly well. The single, 'Tighten Up' is also catchy upon first listen and highly enjoyable. Finally, a cover of Jerry Butler's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' is excellently maneuvered, providing an unexpected but interesting addition to the album.

Brothers by The Black Keys continues the duo's full band sound from their last Dangermouse produced record Attack and Release. Brothers however, turns the hi fi effects off and keeps it tight and gritty. If any record seems most likely to push an indie group headfirst into the mainstream, Brothers by The Black Keys would be it.

If you have listened to any of the Black Keys previous albums and enjoyed it then you will love this one. I am a major BK fan and have been to see a few of their concerts and they are awesome. I highly recommend purchasing this album.

If you are a Black Keys fan you will like this album. It delivers some of the same grunge rock sound and awesome drums, but they also venture into some new territory. I would recommend this one to all Black Keys fans.

Did you know this is a 2 man band?! Truly amazing! I have not heard of The Black Keys until now and I must say, I am hooked. I really like the song The Go Getter. It has a very cool groove to it. A must have for me.

Absolutely love The Black Keys and this album is a definite example of why. The album demonstrates the new sound The Black Keys are going for with a bridge to technology. The rhythm between the guitar and drums has always been the attraction of my desire and now that they have progressed into a sound less grunge (which I have loved from The Big Come Up to Attack & Release) and more advanced sound with multiple guitars even more bass guitar makes it another love of mine.
